Having tested out two of the newest NBA games coming out on the X-Box 360 recently, I felt the need to let you know what you’re in for if you pick the wrong game.
NBA Elite 2010-11
I’m not an expert on the NBA Live series, but I believe this is the latest incarnation of that series (yep). Renamed, re-branded, etc. and possibly for good reason (keep reading). The game is hyped as a brand-new, innovative approach at player and game control, but I wasn’t even able to play it long enough to confirm this.
Why you ask?
The new controls on NBA Elite are so innovative and brilliant, that a 15+ yr game player can’t figure them out in 5+ minutes of play. I’m sure plenty of you will probably just say a) I’m an idiot or b) I didn’t play it long enough, but honestly, if I can’t pick up a game and get going within a few minutes – why would I want to continue playing that game?
Within the first few possessions of having the ball I did the following:
- Accidentally passed the ball – which button? No clue.
- Failed to inbound the ball (see above).
- Turned the ball over – more than once.
- Attempted to shoot about 6 times – only twice did the player actually do it (1 was blocked).
After having trialed through those first few minutes and not (understanding) the controls quickly enough, I looked at the control settings and tried to go back to “classic” or something that resembled it. Imagine my disappointment when again, I was presented with unyielding difficulty in moving the ball between players and (attempting) scoring the ball.
On the plus side, NBA Elite comes with a revised version of NBA Jam – quite likely enough for me to suggest buying this (otherwise) POS game.
[note]Editor’s Note: Due to NBA Elite being delayed to sometime in 2011 NBA Jam will now be sold as a stand-alone product for the Xbox 360 and PS3 .[/note]
For my money – and my enjoyment – I will continue to support the NBA 2K franchise, which launched a much better game IMHO with NBA 2K11. The game is easy to pick up and start enjoying from minute one…
Plus, NBA 2K11 features none other than Michael Jordan (his greatness) – need I say more?
