So it has finally arrived….well sort of… in demo form at least. I am talking about of course Mass Effect 3. I have been looking forward to this game ever since I finished 2 and wanted more. So you can imagine how excited I was when they finally announced there would be a 3rd in the series. Sadly it was pushed back a few times but fret not it is finally going to be in our hands come the 6th of March. Now the demo for this gem was released on PC, Xbox and PS3 yesterday (2/14) and when I got home from work I immediately gave the wife and kid a kiss and proceeded to walk into my office to start the download. Never mind the fact that it was Valentines day and all. When it was done I turned it on and played for the next hour… and let me tell you… that hour went by WAY to fast.
When you turn it on you have the option to either do the single player or give their new multiplayer a try. I didn’t have any other friends I knew playing at the time so I just went through single player. I am hoping to get some multiplayer action in before the release but we will see. Single player starts off just like it would in the regular game you get the option to customize your Shepard the way you want and make him a bit more personal. You get to name him (kinda pointless) and select which fighting style you like. You get to select between: Soldier, Infiltrator, Vanguard, Sentinel, Adept, and Engineer. I can’t fully recall if those same options were in the previous games but to me that seemed like there were more to choose from but I could be just going crazy. You also get to choose the type of game you want to play, either straight up action, story or RP (role playing) I’m not to sure if that was just for demo purposes or if they will have that same option in the retail version. I myself choose the story mode because Mass Effect is of course a great story game and that’s really what you should be playing it for.
Also, let me also clear it up right now that I highly HIGHLY recommend you play the other 2 before playing this one, they clearly go back to a lot of the same characters and you will be completely lost if you don’t know the story. I myself didn’t get a chance to play the first one due to the fact that my PC was a huge piece of shit and I don’t own a 360. I do own the game now for PC and plan on playing through it hopefully before launch. I got into the series when 2nd one released on PS3 and I haven’t looked back. Game is so much fun and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes great story telling.
Ok back to on topic about the demo, you get to play through the opening sequence of the game which is pretty intense. The reapers are back and they are pissed off. They attack earth head on and force Shepard out of retirement (surprised?) This initiates some nice little opening battles as you have to make your way to the Normandy. The opening sequence ends with a pissed off Shepard and we all know what happens when Shepard is pissed off. I won’t spoil why exactly he is in rage mode but you can see his point unless you are a little bit off on the inside. After the opening sequence you are tossed into a mission to help a female Krogan (super sexy Krogan at that winkwink). You will see a lot of familiar faces in this mission that will just further make you want to jump up in glee…or was that just me? Anyways you will find out you are fighting Cerberus which if I remember correctly you were butting heads with after Mass Effect 2 depending how you ended it. Either way they appear to be one of the antagonist(besides the reapers) in the demo. We’ll have to wait to see how that story plays out.
All in all this is what I expected from the demo, the Mass Effect 2 demo was very similar in that it gave you enough of a tease to make you want more. I already have my copy of Mass Effect 3 pre-ordered and will be playing it as soon as I pick it up on the 6th. I highly HIGHLY recommend you do the same. This game will probably be on every ones’ Game of the Year list. You heard it here first folks I am calling it… This will be the Game of the Year.
Oh and yes I did record myself playing through the demo… I thought you would never ask. Here is part 1 and 2 of my playthroughs. Let me know what you think and be sure to subscribe to the channel if you guys want to be overwhelmed with more Mass Effect 3 videos when the game is released.
