By now, you probably have heard of the new kid on the block in the MMORPG scene, DC Universe online. Well, one of those other Super Hero mmo’s has decided to take a different approach to increase its fan base.
Champions Online will be going free to play on January 25, 2011 as we have previously covered back in October. This means no need to spend a dime to play the basic game including PvP. However, there is always a catch. Here at GameJunkster we believe in no BS, and I’m possibly the King at smelling a load of crap a mile away!
While the game itself will be free to download and play, can you really do much without spending a dime? The short answer is: Depends!.
If you are looking into playing CO be adviced that you will only be able to create your new Tights-wearing Hero from a set of pre-selected templates/builds. Gold members, or members with an active paid subscription to the game, will be able to select and custom build their characters with no powers restrictions and free to mix powers as they see fit!
How is that going to affect end game? Well, as an MMORPG veteran all I can say is, that you will possibly be outperformed in every aspect of the game by a gold subscriber ( that knows what he is doing of course).
PvP? well it is there, but unless Cryptic opts for making a free to play arena only…, Let’s just say your chances of survival are pretty slim as an F2P player Vs. a Gold member. We will have to wait and see how they balance the PvP and this pans out.

Can’t wait until january 25,2011 ? well you can also download the free trial and take the game for a spin. Be advised that if you create a “Custom Powerset” Character in the trial it will be considered a “Gold” character once the game goes free to play, and you will not be able to access it unless you pay for a subscription. Will I play CO? Yes I’m in! , will Cryptic get a dime from Kalum? ….. We will have to wait and see. For now lets just say the Character Creator is probably the best in the industry.
